Shenley Brook End Recreation Ground regains a prestigious title
Yesterday we celebrated the raising of the coveted Green Flag over Shenley Brook End Recreation Ground.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. The news that the Rec Ground has regained its accreditation after narrowly missing out last year is testament to the hard work and dedication both locally and from Milton Keynes City Council (MKCC) to care for our largest park.
The flag-raising ceremony was attended by Parish Chair Saleena Raja, Vice-Chair Michael Cato, MKCC Strategic Landscape & Countryside Manager Phil Snell and a team of local residents.
Cllr Raja said, “I want to give a huge thanks to our Environment & Landscape Team, Phil Snell, Parish Councillors and volunteers who work hard all year round to maintain the park, brook and ponds.”
Paul Todd, Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, offered his congratulations to everyone at the Parish Council in achieving the Green Flag Award.
“The recreation ground is a vital green space for the community in Shenley Brook End and the surrounding area, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles,” Paul said. “Staff from the Parish and City Councils and their local volunteers have done so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
“But this is just the beginning,” says Wayne Palmer, the Parish Council’s Environmental Services Manager. “We need to continue to improve all our parks and surrounding landscapes to gain more Green Flags!”
The Parish Council would like to offer our thanks to the local residents who have helped us to maintain the park over the past year, whether planting trees, cleaning out the ponds, monitoring newt populations or raking grass cuttings.
